"Orbitz Dance Movement Therapy"
Today was my first residency, we went to the living facility for the elderly and individuals with disabilities. Ms. Carmal was the artist we shadowed and she dealt primarily with movement therapy. This was my first residence for a clinical setting, so I did not know what to expect except to have fun. Still nervous from the things Jenny and Jill said, it vanished as soon as a young woman resident pulled me in for a long a bear hug who I did not see approach. I smiled and laughed picking up the colorful scarves to do movement exercise with them. Mr. Steven, a man with Down Syndrome, was my partner. Everytime we'd stretch the colorful blanket, Mr. Steven and I would laugh when we caught each other's gaze. At certain moment's in the session, I would lose his attention to follow the routine. Nonetheless, I continued until he'd return his attention to me smiling.
To my surprise, Ms. Carmal congratulated me on the way out from the bathroom about my ability to engage Steven in the Orbitz dance routine. The previous week’s he did not participate as much so it was nice making a difference. After the medical residency, we went back to Arts Care to see Elaine Agnew, a musical artist for arts care. We sang songs and had the opportunity to play the bells. It sounded as if we were a part of the Catholic Church choir.
